This workshop will focus on the use of wide cut strips, primarily #6 cut and up, although details with narrower strips are acceptable. This requires that both motifs and backing be of an adequate size to accommodate this strip width. Students are welcome to use an appropriate pattern of their own choosing: original design, commercial pattern (either a Georgia O'Keefe or other) or Susan's Folly, a pattern offered by the teacher. Students may also choose their preferred method of rendering their flowers and leaves: shading with dip dyes or transcolor, mock shading with valued swatches, or outline and fill with spots, etc. Dyed wool and other materials will be available for purchase.
BIO. Lynne Howard discovered rug hooking in the mide 1980s and has been an accredited McGown teacher since the mid-1990s. She began teaching rug hooking with the Calgary Board of Education evening continuing education program and teaches rug camps and workshops in western Canada and the US. Her particular interest is employing specialty dyed wool to do the work of creating dimension and contrast in rug hooking. She appreciates all aspects of rug hooking but has always been drawn to wide cuts for the cozy nature of their loops and ability to better showcase the nature of woollen textures and fanciful hand-dyes. Her work has been recognized twice in Rug Hooking Magazines' card series, four times in Celebrations and with a People's Choice award at the 2018 Sauder Village rug exhibition.
